Dodgy Sponsored Ad

A quick search for ‘rare books’ on Google, renders a strange list of sponsored ads. The disturbing entry is third from the bottom, where the link text appears to be taking you to McConnell Fine Books, but instead actually links through to a dodgy advertising website (wonderport.com) that lists a bunch of Nick McConnell’s competitors, including a highlighted link to Bernard J Shapero Rare Books. IT staff at Bernard Shapero’s claim they have no relationship with Wonderport and are disturbed by the implicated relationship. They have contacted the company to request that the link be removed from the site. Meanwhile, McConnell’s has requested that Google deal with the sponsored ad that Wonderport has been using.

I wonder how often this sort of skullduggery happens on Google Ads. I personally don’t generally see any of the adverts on Google, thanks to this handy little firefox plugin.
