Busy Times

Apologies if I haven’t posted anything new and interesting in the last couple of days. After a brief soiree up to Chester for a long weekend and my subsequent return to a pile of email and work to get through, I’ve had to put my blog on one side for a while.  Nonetheless, visitors keep coming and more people are starting to leave their comments, which can only be a good thing.

In particular, I am happy to see a nice bunch of useful comments on my request for bookselling application requirements. Also, a couple of people have taken me up on my offer for links back to their sites, so my links list is getting longer every day. Also, this link appeared in the comments for my Web-based VPN article. I haven’t had the time to check it out much, but it looks like an interesting and pretty robust implementation. Still, I would generally venture down the direct line with OpenVPN or one of its variants, just to avoid the middle-man.

Further down the line in my AntiVirus quest, somebody mentioned BitDefender which has had excellent reviews. However, by this stage we had already commited to Kaspersky. Overall, we have been generally impressed with Kaspersky’s performance although we were disappointed to discover that while the freely downloadable trial version of their Home User solution was set at version 6 (with some nifty features, and excellent performance), the corporate version is still stuck at version 5 (with a new release due sometime at the beginning of next year). Another minor frustration was Kaspersky’s reporting of VNC as potential malware. We use VNC quite extensively, and although Kaspersky’s support team attempted to help us write a rule to get the software to ignore VNC, the rule that worked may allow the software to ignore other possible malware, and does not seem to work on all of the systems in our network. This may be due to variance in our choice of VNC software over the years, but is a little irritating nonetheless.

Anyway, all of that said, I will try to post something of more general interest later today, if I get the chance. So please come back soon, and thanks for all the support.
